How big is the hole you are fixing?

Size the damage before you pick a patch. A nail hole or a narrow crack needs only compound and the 1-1/2 in putty knife. A doorknob hole fits the 4 x 4 in Homax galvanized steel patch, which is self-adhesive and backed with fiberglass mesh for drywall or plaster. The repair kit packs the same size patch with 8 fl oz of vinyl spackling, a 3 in knife and two sanding pads. For a bigger or uneven hole, the 6 x 6 in pre-plastered mesh hardens once you wet it, and you can trim and bend it over a curve.

New seams and finish coats are a different job. The Homax tape and mud dispenser holds 5 lbs of mud and up to 500 ft of tape and lays both at once, with a knob that sets how much mud goes down. The 5-piece taping kit adds a 10 in mud pan, a corner tool, a hand sander and two knives, and the 8 in knives come as a pair for wide finish coats. Sanding joint compound throws fine dust that NIOSH says can irritate your eyes, nose and throat. In a house built before 1978, assume old paint may contain lead and avoid dry sanding it.

Do you need water for the Homax pre-plastered mesh patch?

Yes. The mesh is self-adhesive and comes coated with plaster that hardens in minutes once you wet it. You trim and bend the 6 x 6 in patch to fit first, press it on, then activate it. The pack holds two patches.
