    For best results

    • Feather each coat a few inches past the patch so its outline does not telegraph through the paint.
    • In an older house, test the wall for lead or asbestos before you sand old paint or compound.

    How to use

    1. Step 1Clean dust and loose paper from around the hole and let the area dry.
    2. Step 2Press the patch over the hole so it covers the damage with room to spare.
    3. Step 3Spread a thin coat of spackling over the patch and past its edges with the knife.
    4. Step 4Let it dry, sand lightly with a pad, then add a second thin coat if the patch still shows.
    5. Step 5Prime the repair before you paint it to match the wall.

    Before you start

    In a house built before 1978 the paint around the hole may contain lead. Do not dry-sand or power-sand old paint until it has been tested, mist the area and clean up with a damp cloth instead of a broom. Drywall dust itself is fine and travels, so sand with a mask on.
