    For best results

    • Stop as soon as the surface feels smooth, since even the finest grade wears through a thin coat if you keep going.
    • Under a water-based top coat, bronze wool is the safer pick, because loose steel strands can rust inside the finish.

    How to use

    1. Step 1Let the coat dry fully, then rub with the grain using almost no pressure.
    2. Step 2For a satin look, keep rubbing until the sheen is even all over.
    3. Step 3For luster, work a little furniture wax on with the pad and buff it off with a soft cloth.
    4. Step 4Clean off every trace of dust before the final coat.

    About this product

The last rub before the final top coat

Grade #0000 is the finest steel wool in the Rhodes American line, and it belongs to the last stage of a finish. Rub it over shellac, lacquer, varnish or polyurethane before the final top coat, and it levels the surface with only a very light cut.

It also works after the finish is on: buffing furniture wax, rubbing a coat up to a high luster, or turning gloss paint matte. You can use it in place of sandpaper on fine woodworking, and it cleans precision tools and chrome. Homax sells it in bags of 12, 16 or 36 pads.

    Before you start

Stripping paint from old furniture or trim? In a home built before 1978 the paint may contain lead, and the EPA asks you not to clean or rub such paint with steel wool, because it raises lead dust. Have the paint tested first.
