Patching a ceiling or taking the popcorn down?

A ceiling patch is sprayed straight up, so the cans on this shelf have a vertical spray tip. With the Homax popcorn aerosol, you hold the can upright about 18 to 24 inches below the ceiling, after shaking it for a full minute once the ball starts to rattle. The popcorn cans carry real polystyrene chips to match the bumps already overhead. Coverage is small: the 14 oz Easy Patch can covers up to 4 sq ft, and the 16 oz Professional Match can covers up to 2 sq ft. Buy for the stain or hole in front of you, not for the room.

Orange peel and knockdown ceilings have their own cans: a 20 oz water-based can that sprays either pattern and covers up to 80 sq ft, and two Pro Grade cans with an adjustable nozzle. If you plan to take the popcorn down instead, the Homax scraper has a 12 in blade, a threaded handle for an extension pole and a fitting for a plastic bag, with the pole and bag bought separately. Test the ceiling first. The EPA says you cannot tell asbestos by looking, and the CPSC notes that patching compounds and textured paints could contain it before their use was banned in 1977.

Questions

About Homax ceiling texture

Can you match an older popcorn ceiling with Homax popcorn texture?

The popcorn cans use real polystyrene chips, and the Professional Match can is made for popcorn that a contractor sprayed when the house was built. The Pro Grade popcorn can is labeled to copy polystyrene, perlite or other popcorn aggregates, which helps when your ceiling has a coarser look.

How do you hold a Homax ceiling texture can?

Upright. The ceiling cans have a vertical spray tip, so you point the can straight up instead of tipping it over. Directions for the popcorn aerosol put the nozzle about 18 to 24 inches below the ceiling. Short passes and a second light coat beat one heavy blast.

How much ceiling can you cover with one Homax popcorn can?

Less than most people expect. The 14 oz Easy Patch can covers up to 4 sq ft and the 16 oz Professional Match can up to 2 sq ft. That is enough for a water stain or the hole left by an old fixture, not for a whole room.

Should you test a ceiling before using the Homax scraper on it?

Yes, if the ceiling is old. The EPA says you cannot tell whether a material contains asbestos by looking at it and advises against scraping or sanding it until a trained professional has sampled it. A clear result is your go-ahead to scrape.
