    • Before sanding around the patch in an older home, have the paint and compound tested for lead or asbestos.

    How to use

    1. Step 1Trim torn paper and loose gypsum from the hole and wipe off the dust.
    2. Step 2Peel the backing and press the patch over the hole, centered.
    3. Step 3Spread a thin coat of compound over the patch and a few inches past it.
    4. Step 4Let it dry, sand, apply a wider second coat, then prime and paint.

    What goes over a doorknob-size hole before the compound?

    Compound alone cannot span a hole the size of a doorknob, it just drops into the cavity. This Homax patch gives it a backing: a 4 by 4 inch square that pairs galvanized steel with reinforced fiberglass mesh, with adhesive on the back so it sticks over the opening.

    It works on drywall and plaster, on walls and on ceilings. The steel bridges the hole, and the mesh gives compound a surface to grip right out to the edge. You can buy it singly or in packs of two, four or eight, which helps when several doors in a house have done damage.

    Before you start

    In a house built before 1978 the paint around the hole may contain lead. Do not dry-sand or power-sand old paint until it has been tested, mist the area and clean up with a damp cloth instead of a broom. Drywall dust itself is fine and travels, so sand with a mask on.
