- If the ceiling is old and textured, have it tested for asbestos before you scrape or sand around the hole.
- Overhead, several thin coats hold better than one heavy coat, which tends to sag and crack as it dries.
How to use
How to use
- Step 1Trim loose paper and crumbled gypsum from the edges of the hole.
- Step 2Center the patch over the hole and fix it in place as the package directs.
- Step 3Spread a thin first coat of compound over the metal, pressing it through the perforations.
- Step 4Add wider, thinner coats, letting each one dry, then sand lightly and prime.
About this product
What do you put behind compound on a ceiling hole?
A hole overhead is harder to fix than one in a wall, because every coat of compound you add is weight hanging from the edges. The Homax ceiling patch is a thin square of perforated aluminum, 6 by 6 inches, that bridges the gap and gives the compound something to hold.
The perforations do the work: wet compound pushes through the holes and locks onto the metal as it dries. Measure the damage first, since the hole has to sit well inside the square with sound ceiling under the edges. You supply the joint compound and a knife.
If the Perforated Aluminum Ceiling Patch, 6 x 6 in does not fit your job, the wall patch and drywall shelf has 14 more products from the Homax texture and repair range.
Before you start
In a house built before 1978 the paint around the hole may contain lead. Do not dry-sand or power-sand old paint until it has been tested, mist the area and clean up with a damp cloth instead of a broom. Drywall dust itself is fine and travels, so sand with a mask on.
