For best results

  • Sprayed-on ceiling texture in an older home may contain asbestos, so have it tested by a professional before you scrape.
  • Do not dry-sand or sweep up old texture until you know what is in it.
  • Seal the doorways with plastic so loose texture stays in the work room.

How to use

  1. Step 1Clear the room, cover the floor with plastic and tape off the walls.
  2. Step 2Thread the scraper onto an extension pole and attach a plastic bag.
  3. Step 3Push the blade across the ceiling in overlapping strips, emptying the bag often.
  4. Step 4Wipe down and patch the bare drywall before you prime and paint.

About this product

Taking down a popcorn ceiling with less on the floor

Scraping popcorn texture is mostly a cleanup problem: the chips land on the floor, in your hair and across the room. The Homax Popcorn Ceiling Scraper catches much of it at the source. A plastic bag attaches to the head under the 12 inch blade, so loosened texture drops into the bag as you push.

The head is threaded for a standard extension pole, so you can work from the floor instead of a ladder. Neither the pole nor the bag comes in the box. The blade is shaped to keep you from gouging the drywall underneath. Homax rates a 10 by 10 foot ceiling at 30 minutes or less of scraping.

Before you start

Sprayed-on decorative or acoustic ceiling material in an older home can contain asbestos. Do not scrape, sand or wet it until a sample has been tested by an accredited lab, and leave removal of anything that tests positive to a trained contractor.
