Strip or tube: which seam are you closing?

A caulk strip skips the tube altogether. You peel off the backing and press the pre-shaped strip into the corner where a tub or counter meets the wall. Homax makes three widths: the 7/8 in and 1-5/8 in strips come 11 ft long, and the 1-1/4 in floor and tub strip comes 5 ft long, in white silicone, for gaps up to 0.25 in. The extra wide strip has a molded score line that helps you set it straight against the surface. Measure the gap first and pick the width that covers it.

If you stay with tube caulk, the tools on this shelf cover each step. The Homax Caulk Remover has a sharp angled tip that you push forward and back to lift hard, dried caulk out of corners. The Caulk Tip and Cap screws onto a standard tube and gives you three bead sizes, 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 in, each with a 45 degree angle. The Perfect Bead finisher smooths latex, silicone and acrylic caulk and carries the excess away. When you stop for the day, a Caulkeeper cap or the resealing cap keeps the open tube from drying out.

Questions

About Homax caulk strips and tools

Should you use a Homax caulk strip or tube caulk?

A strip is pre-shaped and peels and sticks into place, so you need no gun and no finishing tool. Its width is fixed, though, while a tube lets you choose the bead. If your gap is wider than a strip or runs around odd shapes, tube caulk and a finishing tool are the better fit.

How do you lift old caulk with the Homax Caulk Remover?

Its sharp angled tip digs into the corner, and you work it forward and back to loosen hard, dried caulk. It also cleans up the film left along the edges. The rubber handle helps your grip on a long run around a tub.

Which caulks can you smooth with the Homax Perfect Bead finisher?

Latex, silicone and acrylic caulks. You draw the finisher along the fresh bead, and it presses the caulk into the gap and removes the excess, so your fingers stay clean. It suits windows, tile and siding.

How do Homax caulk caps keep your open tube usable?

The Caulk Tip and Cap screws onto the tube and comes with a resealing cap, plus tips for 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 in beads. Caulkeeper caps fit over the nozzle of a loaded gun between jobs. Either way, the caulk inside is kept from drying out while it waits.
