Which texture is on your wall?

Match the pattern before you buy the can. Run a hand over the wall, look at it in raking light, and pick the texture that fits.
  1. 1

    Orange peel

Fine, even bumps like the skin of an orange. Hard to see straight on, easy to feel with a flat hand.

  2. 2

    Knockdown

Larger splatter with flattened tops, like dried mud smoothed by a trowel. It is orange peel sprayed heavier and knocked flat while still wet.

  3. 3

    Popcorn

Lumpy, cottage-cheese texture on a ceiling. In an older home, have it tested for asbestos before you scrape, sand or wet it.

    Sand or stone

A gritty paint finish rather than a sprayed one. It goes on with a roller, mixed into the paint or from a gallon of textured paint.

How this guide works

Independent, and written from the label

We are a guide, not the maker. Homax products are made by Homax Products, a PPG company, and nothing here speaks for them. We read the label and the product data of each item, write down what it is for and what it asks of you, and leave out what we cannot confirm.

Prices and ratings come from our last update, and the buttons send you to our retail partner, who handles payment and delivery.

Which Homax wall texture matches the wall in your house?

Look closely at the bumps. Small, round spatter is orange peel, and flattened drops with smooth tops are knockdown. Homax makes both patterns in water-based cans, orange peel also comes oil-based, and the Pro Grade cans add pressure control for larger patches. Our wall texture guide shows how to test the pattern before you spray the wall.

Can you patch a popcorn ceiling with a Homax aerosol?

Yes, for small spots. The Homax popcorn cans spray straight up through a vertical tip and carry real polystyrene chips, but coverage is a few square feet per can, not a room. Have an older ceiling tested for asbestos before you scrape anything loose. The steps are in how to patch a popcorn ceiling.

How much tub can you refinish with one Homax Tough as Tile kit?

The 21 oz can in the brush-on kit covers one standard tub or two bathroom sinks. If your tub is oversized, or you also plan to do the tile around it, count on a second can. The prep and the curing time are laid out in how to refinish a bathtub.

Which Homax patch do you need for a hole in drywall?

Go by the size of the hole. A nail hole needs only compound and a narrow knife. A doorknob hole takes the 4 x 4 in self-adhesive steel patch, and a wider or uneven hole takes the 6 x 6 in pre-plastered mesh. How to patch drywall walks you from the patch to the finish coat.

Which Homax steel wool grade do you need between coats of varnish?

Rhodes American #0, the fine grade, is the one labeled for between coats. Move up to #0000, the super fine grade, when you are smoothing the varnish just before the final top coat. If you need the old varnish off altogether, that is a job for the coarse #3 grade.
