- Handle the cleaned copper by the ends or with gloves, since skin oil on the joint can keep solder from flowing.
- On glazed tile, try a hidden corner first, as a medium coarse pad can dull the glaze.

About this product
Cleaning copper pipe before you solder a joint
Solder flows poorly over dull, oxidized copper. Grade #2 is a medium coarse steel wool, firm enough to scour pipe ends, fittings and joints back to bright metal before you flux them, and to clean roofing metal before a soldered repair.
It sits between #1 medium and #3 coarse in the Homax Rhodes American line. You can also scrub dirty grout between tiles with it or polish golf club heads. Check the grade number printed on the bag before you start, because coarse and fine pads look much alike in the hand.
If the Rhodes American Steel Wool, #2 Medium Coarse does not fit your job, the steel wool shelf has 9 more products from the Homax selection.

Stripping paint from old furniture or trim? In a home built before 1978 the paint may contain lead, and the EPA asks you not to clean or rub such paint with steel wool, because it raises lead dust. Have the paint tested first.
