- Strippers give off fumes, so follow the label and its safety data sheet, open a window and run a fan.
- Before stripping paint in an older home, test it for lead, and do not scour lead paint with steel wool.

About this product
Taking paint and varnish off furniture and metal
Stripping a dresser or a metal chair goes faster with an abrasive that bites. Grade #3 is the coarse grade, finer than #4 and rougher than #2, and you use it for lifting old paint and varnish along with shellac, lacquer, rust and grime.
It also scrubs rough metal: stove surfaces, engines and heavy machinery parts. Because it cuts quickly and leaves a scratch pattern, wood stripped with #3 needs a finer grade before it takes a new finish. Homax sells #3 in bags of 6, 12, 16 or 36 pads.

Before you start
Stripping paint from old furniture or trim? In a home built before 1978 the paint may contain lead, and the EPA asks you not to clean or rub such paint with steel wool, because it raises lead dust. Have the paint tested first.
