Match the patch to the size of the hole

Pick a Homax wall patch by the size and the place of the hole. The 4 x 4 inch galvanized steel patch with fiberglass mesh is self-adhesive and sized for a doorknob hole in drywall or plaster. The 6 x 6 inch pre-plastered mesh comes two to a pack, trims and bends around curves, and hardens once you wet the plaster. A ceiling gets its own 6 x 6 perforated aluminum patch, and the outlet patch is made for the torn drywall around an outlet box.

If this is your first drywall repair, the patch and repair kit holds a 4 x 4 steel patch, 8 fl oz of vinyl spackling, a 3 inch putty knife and two sanding pads, enough to take one hole from open to smooth. Spread the spackling past the edge of the patch, let it dry, then sand it flush. Sanding raises fine dust, and NIOSH has found that joint compound dust can irritate the eyes, nose and throat, so close the room off and follow the label on protection.

Questions

Wall patches: what people ask

Can you use a Homax patch on a ceiling?

Yes. The 6 x 6 in perforated aluminum patch is made for ceilings, and the galvanized steel patch and the repair kit are labeled for walls and ceilings. Thin coats of compound are easier to work overhead than one thick coat.

Do you need adhesive for the Homax steel wall patch?

Yes. The 4 x 4 in patch combines galvanized steel with reinforced fiberglass mesh and sticks straight onto drywall or plaster around the hole. It comes singly and in 2, 4 and 8 packs, so you can stock up for a house of doorknob dents.

Can you put a Homax mesh patch on stucco or a curved wall?

Yes. The pre-plastered mesh patch is labeled for drywall, plaster and stucco, on smooth, textured, curved or uneven surfaces. You trim and bend it to fit before you wet it, and the plaster forms to the surface as it sets.
