Spray it, let it set, then flatten it with a knife
Knockdown, sometimes called Southwest style, starts as heavy spatter that you flatten with a knife once it sets, then paint over. All four Homax knockdown cans are water-based, so the knife and the nozzle clean up with water. The 10 oz wall can sprays medium to heavy drops and covers up to 30 sq ft, which makes it a patch can rather than a room can. For a larger repair, the 25 oz Pro Grade wall can lets you set both the tip and the spray pressure, comes tinted so you can see coverage, and needs no primer before paint.
Ceilings take a different valve. The two ceiling cans spray from a vertical tip, so you hold the can upright and aim overhead. One sprays either orange peel or knockdown from a 20 oz can, covers up to 80 sq ft, and is paintable and sandable once dry. The Pro Grade knockdown ceiling can, also 20 oz, adds an adjustable nozzle so you can match the size of the splats already up there, and it uses the same no-prime, water-cleanup formula as the Pro Grade wall can.
These 4 products are part of the Homax range, $10.09 to $28.98 in our last catalog update.
Questions
Knockdown texture: what people ask
When do you knock down Homax knockdown texture?
Spray the spatter, give it a short time to set so the drops hold their shape, then draw a wide knife lightly across the tops. Flattening too soon smears the pattern, and too late leaves hard peaks. Try your timing on a scrap of drywall before the wall.
Which Homax knockdown can do you use on a ceiling?
Two of them. The 20 oz ceiling texture sprays knockdown or orange peel through a vertical tip, and the 20 oz Pro Grade knockdown ceiling can has an adjustable nozzle and a water-based, no-prime formula. The 10 oz and 25 oz knockdown cans are for walls.
How much wall can you cover with a can of Homax knockdown?
The 10 oz water-based knockdown can covers up to 30 sq ft. The 25 oz Pro Grade knockdown can holds more and adjusts its tip and pressure, which suits a larger repair, though its coverage is not printed.
